Waterproofing Services in Aburi 2026: Hillside Homes & Roofs
Share
Fest Ghana Limited waterproofs roofs, retaining walls, drainage channels, gutters and water tanks in Aburi and across the Akuapem Ridge. Ridge sites get more rain, more mist and more groundwater than Accra, so the drainage matters as much as the membrane. Roof waterproofing costs GHS 80-130 per m² for a two-coat polyurethane system, with a 20-year design life and a 3-year workmanship warranty plus a 3-year material warranty.
What makes Aburi different
Aburi is a different waterproofing problem from Accra. Three things change:
- More rain, slower drying. The ridge receives noticeably more rainfall than coastal Accra's roughly 800 mm, and mist keeps masonry damp for days. A wall that would dry in Accra in an afternoon stays wet here.
- Hillside groundwater. Houses cut into the slope have a back wall or retaining wall holding wet soil. Water arrives from behind, not from above.
- Surface run-off. Storm water coming down the hill needs somewhere to go. If the drainage channel is undersized or cracked, it discharges against the foundation.
The Aburi hillside villa: what we learned
Our Aburi hillside villa project involved a retaining wall and a drainage channel. The lesson was simple: the channel had to carry water away before the wall could be expected to stay dry. Coating a wall that has water standing behind it is treating the symptom.
Which system goes where
| Element | Water comes from | Right approach |
|---|---|---|
| Flat concrete roof | Above (positive side) | 2-coat PU, GHS 80-130/m²; fleece only at parapets and outlets |
| Retaining wall — soil side accessible | Behind (positive side) | Membrane on soil face plus drainage behind wall |
| Retaining wall — only inside face accessible | Behind (negative side) | Crystalline cementitious — not PU alone |
| Drainage channel | Inside the channel | Repair cracks, then full-channel membrane |
The negative-side rule is the same one we applied at the Kasoa filling station sump pit: crystalline cementitious first, PU as a top-coat. Read more in positive vs negative side waterproofing.
Realistic service life on the ridge
Design life is always 20 years. Aburi is inland and away from coastal salt, so 18-20 years of real service is realistic — similar to Koforidua, which gets around 1,400-1,600 mm of rain a year. What shortens life on the ridge is not sun or salt but standing water: blocked outlets, ponding and channels that back up.
The warranty is the period we return and fix it at our cost — 3 years workmanship and 3 years manufacturer material. The design life is how long the membrane is engineered to keep performing. They are different numbers for a reason.
Materials if you're doing a small job yourself
- Polyurethane Coating 10kg — GHS 1,000: 40-80 m² per coat, 20-40 m² finished with 2 coats
- Polyurethane Coating 5kg — GHS 500: 20-40 m² per coat, 10-20 m² finished with 2 coats
- Plugging King leak stop powder — GHS 100 for active water through a wall crack
Budget around 0.4 kg per m² for two coats.
