Why Aburi's Terrain Creates a Different Waterproofing Problem
Aburi sits in the Akuapem hills, and its steep terrain means rainwater does not spread evenly across a plot the way it does on flat Accra land — it channels downhill, gathering volume and force before hitting whatever is in its path. For hillside villas built into or against a slope, that often means a retaining wall or lower-level roof edge takes the full brunt of concentrated runoff during every rainy season storm, a load the original waterproofing (if any) was never designed for.
The Problem We Found
On this Aburi villa, the homeowner reported damp patches spreading along the base of an interior wall on the lowest level, worsening every rainy season. Our free site assessment traced it to two compounding issues: a retaining wall with no dedicated waterproof membrane on its uphill face, and a roof-edge junction just above it where runoff from the slope was pooling before draining.
Our Fix
Redirecting Surface Runoff First
We added a shallow surface drainage channel above the retaining wall to intercept hillside runoff and redirect it around the building rather than letting it pool against the wall.
This came first for a reason. Waterproofing alone does not fix a drainage problem — it just buys the membrane a fighting chance. A coating on a wall that concentrated runoff is still hitting is being asked to hold back water under sustained pressure, which is not what a positive-side membrane is designed for. On sloped sites, the drainage work is usually the cheaper half of the job and does more of the work.
Fleece-Reinforced Membrane at the Junction
We then applied fleece-reinforced polyurethane membrane across the retaining wall's uphill face and up into the roof-edge junction, giving the system enough tensile strength to handle the remaining load without cracking — the same reinforcement logic behind our rising damp basement repair work.
Fleece and standard two-coat polyurethane share the same 20-year design life. Fleece was specified here because the junction is a high-movement detail carrying concentrated water, not because it lasts longer on paper.
