When DIY Is the Right Call

When DIY Costs You More

The Five Mistakes That Cause DIY Failure

None of these are material problems. All five are planning and technique.

  1. Buying too little material. The coverage figure on a bucket is per coat, and waterproofing needs two. Halve it before you order. Budget 0.4 kg/m² — a 50 m² roof needs about 20 kg, or two 10kg buckets. Running out mid-coat and finishing the next day leaves a cold joint, and that joint is where it will leak.
  2. Inadequate surface preparation. Dust and loose material left in place. The coating bonds to the dirt, then peels away with it.
  3. Applying to a damp substrate. Trapped vapour lifts the membrane into blisters within a year. Concrete must be below roughly 4% moisture.
  4. Skipping reinforcement at details. Most leaks start at a junction, not in the open field. Fleece or butyl banding at parapets, drains and penetrations is not optional.
  5. One thick coat instead of two. Thick coats cure unevenly and pinhole. Two thinner coats, applied perpendicular to each other, is the whole technique.

Get those five right and DIY works. Get them wrong and no product will save the job.

  • Leak Seal Tape — GHS 250, for banding every crack and joint before coating
  • Plugging King — GHS 100, if any water is actively flowing
  • Wire brush, long-handle roller, brush for edges, safety equipment
