Damp Wall Treatment Products in Ghana — Complete Buyer's Guide
Ghanaian homeowners spend millions of cedis every year on damp wall treatment products — and most of them buy the wrong thing. The market is confusing: waterproof paint, waterproof coating, sealants, plugging powders, chemical DPC, damp-proof membranes. Which does what? What's the price? What actually fixes YOUR problem?
This guide gives you a straight, honest breakdown of every damp wall treatment product available in Ghana — what each does, when to use it, what it costs, and where to buy authentic (not counterfeit) versions.
Read this before you buy anything: coverage is quoted per coat. Every waterproof coating on the Ghanaian market — ours included — advertises how far a bucket goes on one coat. A real waterproofing job is two. Halve the label figure before you order, or you will be back at the shop halfway through the wall. The working number is about 0.4 kg per square metre across both coats.
The 6 Categories of Damp Wall Treatment Products
1. Polyurethane Waterproof Coating (Best For Permanent Fix)
What it is: Liquid membrane that forms a permanent waterproof barrier on walls.
Best for: Serious damp problems, comprehensive wall waterproofing, long-term protection.
Design life: 20 years. (Warranty is separate and shorter — see the note below.)
Cost: GHS 500 (5kg) to GHS 1,000 (10kg) at Fest Ghana Limited.
Coverage: 10kg covers 40–80 m² per coat, so 20–40 m² finished at two coats. 5kg covers 20–40 m² per coat, so 10–20 m² finished.
Where to buy: Fest Ghana 5kg · Fest Ghana 10kg
2. Waterproof Paint (Cosmetic Only)
What it is: Thin decorative paint with water-repellent additives.
Best for: Aesthetic finish only — NOT for actual damp problems.
Lifespan: 2–5 years (fails fast in Ghana climate).
Cost: GHS 150–400 per 4L can.
Warning: Do NOT use as replacement for waterproof coating. Won't stop rising damp, seepage, or wall leaks. Reference: Waterproof Paint vs Coating.
3. Butyl Rubber Waterproof Tape (Quick Joint Fix)
What it is: Self-adhesive tape that seals joints, cracks, and gaps.
Best for: Emergency repair of joint leaks, pipe/wall interfaces, crack sealing, temporary fixes.
Lifespan: 10+ years when properly applied.
Cost: GHS 250 per roll at Fest Ghana Limited.
Where to buy: Fest Ghana Butyl Rubber Tape
4. Plugging Powder / Hydraulic Cement (Emergency Leak Stop)
What it is: Fast-setting cement powder that stops flowing water in seconds — even underwater.
Best for: Emergency active leaks, foundation seepage, wall cracks with flowing water.
Lifespan: Permanent once set.
Cost: GHS 100 per bag at Fest Ghana Limited.
Where to buy: Fest Ghana Plugging King
5. Waterproof Leakage Spray (Spot Fix)
What it is: Aerosol spray-on waterproof coating.
Best for: Small pinhole leaks, hairline cracks, hard-to-reach spots, ceiling corners.
Lifespan: 3–5 years for spot repairs.
Cost: GHS 200 per can at Fest Ghana Limited.
Where to buy: Fest Ghana Waterproof Leakage Spray
6. Chemical DPC / Damp-Proof Injection (Rising Damp)
What it is: Silicone-based cream injected into wall base to create horizontal damp barrier.
Best for: Rising damp in ground-level walls, basement damp, existing DPC failure.
Lifespan: 20–30 years per the DPC manufacturer's stated design life.
Cost: GHS 400–700 per metre of wall (installed).
Note: This is a PROFESSIONAL installation — not DIY. Reference: Rising Damp Complete Guide.
Design life is not warranty. The 20-year figure on our polyurethane is design life — how long the membrane is engineered to keep performing. The warranty is the shorter period during which it is replaced or repaired at our cost: 3 years workmanship, 3 years manufacturer material warranty. Any product in Ghana advertising a "20-year warranty" is quoting design life under the wrong heading. Ask for the warranty document.

The Product We'd Rather You Didn't Buy From Us
If your wall is damp only at the base, with a horizontal tide line and white salt deposits, do not buy polyurethane coating. It will not fix it and you will have wasted the money.
That pattern is rising damp — water moving up through the wall from the ground. Coating the face traps it, and the salts push the coating off within weeks. It needs a chemical DPC, which is a professional job and not something we sell in a bucket. We would rather tell you that now than sell you two 10kg tins that were never going to work.

Products to Approach With Caution
- Unbranded "waterproof paint" sold loose in local markets — no batch number, no data sheet, no way to know what is in the tin
- Water-based sealants marketed as "waterproofing" — these are surface sealers and will not hold back damp
- Bitumen products on interior walls — they stain permanently and are not formulated for occupied interiors
- Very cheap silicone "waterproof" tape — the adhesive typically gives up under Ghanaian roof temperatures
The practical test for any of these: ask the seller for the technical data sheet. A genuine product has one. If nobody can produce it, you are buying on trust alone.
DIY Application Tips
- Substrate must be dry — wait after rain, and give fresh concrete time to cure
- Substrate must be clean — wire brush loose material, sweep, remove dust
- Prime if needed — fresh concrete requires primer
- Apply 2 coats perpendicular to each other for polyurethane, and measure what you use — if a 10kg tin covered far more than 40 m², the film is too thin
- Allow full cure before rain exposure
- Wear PPE — gloves, mask, safety glasses
When to Call a Professional
Even the best product needs proper application. Call Fest Ghana Limited if:
- Damage is extensive (multiple walls affected)
- You can't identify the water source
- Building is 2+ storeys (access issues)
- Damp is combined with structural cracks
- You want a written warranty
- You've tried DIY 2+ times and it keeps failing
Frequently Asked Questions
Which product is best for concrete roof waterproofing?
Polyurethane liquid coating. Size it on 0.4 kg per m² across two coats — so roughly one 10kg bucket per 25 m² of roof.
What's the difference between waterproof paint and waterproof coating?
Paint is a thin decorative film with a 2–5 year life that sits on the surface. Coating is a membrane applied at roughly 0.4 kg/m² over two coats, with a 20-year design life and enough elongation to bridge movement in the slab. They are not the same product and not substitutes. Reference: Full comparison.
How do I know how much to order?
Measure the area, multiply by 0.4 kg. A 50 m² wall or roof needs about 20 kg — two 10kg buckets. Add a little for parapet upstands and vertical returns, which plan measurements always miss.
Can I mix products from different brands?
Sometimes yes, but always check compatibility. Better to use one manufacturer's complete system.
Do you deliver outside Accra?
Yes, nationwide. 2-5 days depending on location. Delivery fees GHS 30-500 depending on destination.
Do you offer contractor discounts?
Yes. 15% off orders of 20+ units with code FESTCONTRACTOR15. Project pricing for 50+ units — call for quote.
Not Sure Which Product You Need?
