Dust Control on Construction Sites in Ghana (2026 Guide)

Watering a haul route in Accra buys you about three hours. The water evaporates, the fines come back, and you do it again after lunch — every working day through the dry season. Binding the surface with a polymer stabiliser costs roughly GHS 20-23 per square metre once and holds for months.

What dust is actually costing you

Most site managers treat dust as a nuisance rather than a line item. It is a line item.

  • Bowser hire and labour. Two passes a day, five or six days a week, for the length of the dry season.
  • Water itself. Not free, and on sites without a mains connection, trucked in.
  • Plant maintenance. Fines get into air filters and hydraulics. Service intervals shorten.
  • Neighbour complaints. On residential infill sites in East Legon or Spintex, these escalate to the assembly and cost you working days.
  • Finished work. Dust settles on fresh paint, wet screed and newly glazed units. Some of it comes off; some of it means redoing work.
  • Worker health. Silica dust is not a minor matter, and a site that visibly manages it is a site that retains people.

Why watering alone fails here

Ghana makes water suppression particularly weak. Surface temperatures reach 75°C, UV index runs above 11, and Harmattan brings dry wind from the north for weeks at a time. A watered surface in those conditions is dry well before the next break.

There is a second problem. Repeated wetting and drying works fines to the surface. The route you have been watering for a month often produces more dust than it did when you started.

The alternative

A sand fixing agent is an acrylic polymer that soaks 5-10 mm into the running surface and cures, binding the fines into a crust. It is not a coating sitting on top — it becomes part of the surface, so traffic does not peel it off.

Where to apply it on a site

You do not treat the whole site. Target what actually generates dust:

  1. Haul routes and the main access. Vehicle movement is the biggest single source.
  2. The gate apron. Where trucks pull onto the public road and carry dust with them — this is what neighbours see.
  3. Stockpile surrounds. Sand and aggregate bays.
  4. Parking and laydown areas.
  5. Any area adjoining occupied buildings. Schools, clinics and homes next door should be first, not last.

Doing it properly

Grade and compact first. Stabilising a rutted surface locks the ruts in place. Clear loose debris, apply neat by sprayer — do not dilute — and allow 20-24 hours before traffic returns. Plan it over a weekend or a shutdown.

One drum covers 70-80 m². A 200 m haul route at 4 m wide is 800 m², so roughly ten to eleven drums. Price that against your bowser costs for the season before deciding.

Timing

November to March. You need 24 dry hours after application, and that is also when dust is worst. Apply early in the dry season rather than in February when you have already paid for three months of watering.
