How to Store Leftover Polyurethane Waterproofing Coating in Ghana (2026)

Leftover polyurethane waterproofing coating can be kept for a future job if the tin is resealed tightly and stored in a shaded, moderate-temperature spot away from direct sun and heat. An opened tin is usable for a few months under good storage, but always patch-test before relying on it for a full job.

Why Storage Matters More in Ghana Than in Cooler Climates

Polyurethane coating is sensitive to heat and air exposure. Ghana's ambient temperatures, combined with storage sheds that can sit under tin roofs reaching up to 75°C, accelerate the chemical changes that thicken or skin over a partially used tin far faster than in a temperate climate. A tin that would last a season in cooler storage can degrade in weeks if left in a hot store room.

How to Store It Properly

  1. Reseal the tin immediately after use — press the lid down firmly and, if possible, tap it closed with a mallet around the rim for a tighter seal.
  2. Store indoors, in shade, away from direct sun through a window or open door.
  3. Keep it off a hot concrete floor or metal shelf near a tin roof; a cool store room or covered area away from the roofline is best.
  4. Store upright, not on its side, to reduce the surface area exposed to any air gap at the seal.
  5. Label the tin with the date opened so you know how long it's been sitting before your next job.

Signs the Coating Has Gone Bad

Sign What It Means
Thick, lumpy texture that won't stir smooth Material has begun curing in the tin — discard
Skin formed across the surface Remove skin and check the material underneath before use; if it's still lumpy, discard
Strong off odour beyond normal chemical smell Sign of degradation — do not use
Separation that won't remix Formulation has broken down — discard

When in doubt, patch-test on a small, inconspicuous area and check adhesion and cure after 24-48 hours before committing leftover material to a full roof.

Buying the Right Amount the First Time

Coverage is quoted per coat, and two coats are required for a proper finish. Our 5kg Polyurethane Coating (GHS 500) covers 20-40 m² per coat, 10-20 m² finished with two coats. Our 10kg (GHS 1,000) covers 40-80 m² per coat, 20-40 m² finished. Budget roughly 0.4 kg/m² across both coats for an accurate take-off, and buy close to what you need rather than relying on long-term storage of leftovers.
