Liquid Membrane vs Sheet Membrane — Which Suits Ghana?
Liquid membrane cures into one seamless sheet with no joints. Sheet membrane gives factory-controlled thickness but introduces a welded lap every roll width. For the typical Ghanaian roof — under 500 m², with parapets, drains and penetrations — liquid polyurethane is usually the stronger choice.

The Seam Problem
This is the argument that decides most Ghanaian roofs.
A 1-metre-wide sheet membrane on a 200 m² roof creates roughly 200 linear metres of welded seam. Every one of those metres depends on the installer applying the right heat for the right time under the right pressure — on a hot roof, by hand, often at speed.
Liquid membrane has zero seams in the open field. The failure risk moves entirely to the details, which is where reinforcement fleece is applied deliberately.
Where Sheet Membrane Genuinely Wins
- Large, simple commercial roofs. 2,000 m² of unobstructed deck goes down far faster in sheet.
- Guaranteed film thickness. The roll is what it says it is. Liquid thickness depends on the applicator not cutting corners.
- Buried and trafficked applications. Under screed, planters or paving, sheet resists mechanical damage better.
- Immediate weather resistance. No cure period — important if rain is imminent.
Where Liquid Wins
- Anything with details. Parapets, drains, pipes, AC brackets, roof-light upstands — liquid simply flows around them.
- Curved and irregular surfaces. Domes, arches, gutters, tanks.
- Occupied buildings. No open flame near an occupied or finished structure.
- Ghanaian heat. Polyurethane holds to 80°C+; bitumen sheet softens above 55°C, well below a 75°C roof surface.
- Future maintenance. Recoating a liquid system is straightforward. Patching sheet is a specialist job.
