Fuel Station Waterproofing in Ghana — Complete 2026 Guide

Fuel stations in Ghana need waterproofing at three distinct points — canopy roofs, forecourt surfaces, and sump pits around underground tanks — each requiring a different system. The sump pit is the one that matters most, and it is also the one most commonly specified wrongly.

Three Waterproofing Zones at a Fuel Station

1. Underground Tanks and Sump Pits

This is the highest-risk zone. Groundwater pressing against a sump pit wall can find its way in through hairline cracks, and once it does, it risks contaminating fuel or corroding tank fittings from outside.

Why a coating alone fails in a sump pit

Below ground, water pushes inward. A coating applied to the inside face of the pit is on the negative side of that pressure, and sustained hydrostatic force will eventually lift it off the concrete no matter how good the coating is. This is a physics problem, not a product-quality problem. The correct specification is a crystalline cementitious system — which reacts within the concrete matrix rather than sitting on it — with a polyurethane top-coat over it, plus waterstops at every construction joint. That is what we used at our Kasoa filling station project.

If a contractor quotes you a liquid coating alone for a sump pit sitting in a high water table, they are quoting a repair you will be paying for again.

2. Canopy Roofs

Canopy roofs over the pump islands take direct sun and rain with almost no shade, pushing surface temperatures toward 70°C+ in the dry season. A standard 2-coat polyurethane system handles this well and protects the steel structure underneath from corrosion. Note that on a steel canopy the practical service life is governed by the condition of the steel, not the coating above it.

3. Forecourt and Apron Surfaces

Forecourt concrete needs waterproofing that also resists fuel and oil spillage without softening or lifting — a different chemical resistance requirement than roof coatings, and one worth specifying explicitly when getting quotes. Ask for the product's chemical resistance data, not just its waterproofing performance.
