Your ceiling is developing bubbles. Bubbling ceilings are one of the earliest warning signs of a serious problem — and one of the most misdiagnosed.
Cause 1: Water Leaking From the Roof Above
How to check: Do the bubbles get worse during or after heavy rain?

Cause 2: Condensation Trapped in the Ceiling Void
How to check: Bubbles in bathrooms, kitchens, or laundry areas without any obvious roof leak. Bubbles worst in wet season.
Fix: Improve ventilation. Install an extractor fan vented to the outside.
Cause 3: Cheap Paint Applied Over Damp Plaster
How to check: Bubbles appeared shortly after a recent paint job. No active leak.
Fix: Peel off the bubbled paint. Wait 4–12 weeks for full drying. Repaint with a breathable primer + emulsion system.
Cause 4: Plumbing Leak From the Floor Above
How to check: Is the bubble directly beneath a bathroom, kitchen, or laundry area on the floor above?
Fix: Investigate the plumbing above. Repair the leaking pipe or joint.
What NOT to Do
- Do not repaint over the bubbles. Paint over wet plaster will bubble again within weeks.
- Do not scrape the bubbles and repaint immediately. Wait for the plaster to fully dry.
- Do not assume it is “just condensation” if the bubbles are getting worse each rainy season.
- Do not ignore small bubbles. Bubbles grow into stains. Stains grow into drips. Drips grow into collapsed ceilings.
