Waterproofing Tape for Water Tanks in Ghana — Complete Guide (2026)

Waterproofing Tape for Water Tanks — What Works

Butyl rubber waterproofing tape seals external water tank seams, hairline cracks and leaks around fittings. It costs GHS 250 for a 10cm × 5m roll and bonds even on a wet surface. For the inside of a drinking water tank, tape is the wrong product — use a certified food-safe system.

Match the Fix to the Leak

Tank Problem Correct Fix
Weeping seam on a plastic (poly) tank Butyl tape, external
Leak around outlet or inlet fitting Butyl tape wrapped fully around
Rust pinhole in a metal tank Butyl tape with 50 mm overlap
Hairline crack in concrete tank wall Butyl tape externally, or crystalline slurry internally
Water actively jetting out Plugging King first, then tape
Concrete tank leaking in several places Full internal food-safe waterproofing system
Damp patch on the outside wall, no visible crack Structural assessment — book an inspection

How to Tape a Tank Leak — Step by Step

  1. Drain below the leak. You do not need to empty the tank — just get the water level under the defect.
  2. Clean the area. Remove algae, scale, dust and any old sealant. A wire brush works on concrete and metal; a cloth is enough on plastic.
  3. Dry roughly if you can. Butyl bonds wet, but a drier surface gives a stronger bond.
  4. Cut generously. Extend 50 mm past the defect in every direction.
  5. Apply and press firmly. Work from the centre outward. Remove every air bubble.
  6. Refill and watch. Fill slowly and check for 30 minutes before walking away.

The Drinking Water Rule

This matters and it is often ignored.

  • Outside of the tank — butyl tape is fine, including on potable water tanks
  • Inside a potable water tank — use only a certified food-safe waterproofing system

Construction-grade materials are not tested for contact with drinking water. If the tank supplies your kitchen, the internal surface needs a food-safe specification. Fest Ghana installs certified potable-safe systems for domestic and institutional tanks.

When the Tank Is Beyond Taping

Tape buys you time. If any of these apply, the tank needs proper treatment:

  • Leaks appearing in three or more places
  • Visible cracking through the full wall thickness
  • Water loss you can measure overnight
  • Reinforcement visible in a concrete tank
  • You have taped the same spot twice already
