How to Tape a Tank Leak — Step by Step

Drain below the leak. You do not need to empty the tank — just get the water level under the defect.
Clean the area. Remove algae, scale, dust and any old sealant. A wire brush works on concrete and metal; a cloth is enough on plastic.
Dry roughly if you can. Butyl bonds wet, but a drier surface gives a stronger bond.
Cut generously. Extend 50 mm past the defect in every direction.
Apply and press firmly. Work from the centre outward. Remove every air bubble.
Refill and watch. Fill slowly and check for 30 minutes before walking away.

The Drinking Water Rule
