Why Potable Tanks Cost More

Three reasons, and all of them are legitimate:

  1. Certified food-safe material. Construction-grade waterproofing must not be used inside a drinking water tank. Certified systems cost more per litre.
  2. Longer process. Drain, clean, dry, treat, cure, flush, refill. Each step takes time and the tank is out of service throughout.
  3. Full cure before contact. The system must be fully cured and flushed before water returns — no shortcuts.

If a quote for a drinking water tank looks unusually cheap, ask which certified food-safe product is being used. If there is no clear answer, do not proceed.

What a Leaking Tank Actually Costs You

A slow leak is easy to ignore. Over a year it rarely is.

Consequence Impact
Water loss Continuous; you pay for water that leaves the tank
Pump cycling More running hours, higher electricity, shorter pump life
Ground saturation Undermines foundations around an underground tank
Contamination A crack that lets water out also lets groundwater in
Structural Reinforcement corrodes; repair cost multiplies

The contamination point is the serious one. A leak is a two-way path. Groundwater entering a potable tank is a health issue, not a maintenance issue.

Test Your Tank Tonight

  1. Fill the tank and mark the water level clearly
  2. Turn off every outlet and the inlet
  3. Leave overnight, at least 8 hours
  4. Check the mark in the morning

Any drop that usage cannot explain means a leak. Note the level it settles at — that usually tells you the height of the defect.
