Most Ghanaian homeowners repaint their exterior walls every 2–3 years. It looks fresh for a rainy season or two, then the peeling comes back. The paint gets thicker with each cycle. The wall never actually gets fixed. And the paint job costs GHS 6,000–25,000 each time.

Why Exterior Paint Peels in Ghana
1. Wind-driven rain pushing through cracks in the render
Ghana’s coastal storms push rain sideways against exterior walls at 30–60 km/h. Any hairline crack in the plaster or render lets water into the substrate. When the sun heats the wall, moisture evaporates outward through the paint film, pushing it off.
2. Rising damp reaching painted zones
Groundwater rises into the exterior wall by capillary action. Where it reaches painted areas 30–100 cm above the ground, salts and moisture push paint off in flakes.
3. Poor-quality paint or wrong paint for exterior conditions
Interior-grade emulsion applied to exterior walls fails within one rainy season. Even good exterior paint applied over a damp or unprepared substrate will fail.
4. No breathable coating layer
Standard vinyl paint traps moisture inside the wall. As the wall gets wet from rain, the trapped moisture pushes the film off from behind.

The Permanent Fix — A 4-Step Exterior Wall System
Step 1: Diagnose and fix the moisture source
If rising damp is present, chemical DPC injection is required. If penetrating damp through the render, seal the entry points first. See our damp walls guide.
Step 2: Strip all loose material and repair the substrate
Strip all peeling paint back to sound substrate. Repair any cracks in the render with cementitious repair mortar. Wait for full drying (typically 21–28 days for repaired render).
Step 3: Apply an exterior wall waterproofing coat
This is the step that most Ghanaian paint jobs skip. A thin waterproof coating layer applied to the exterior render forms a rain-shedding barrier BEHIND the decorative paint. Any water that reaches the wall runs off the coating layer instead of soaking into the render.
Use an acrylic-modified waterproofing coat rated for exterior use — breathable so trapped moisture can escape upward and outward, but water-repellent so rain runs off.
Step 4: Apply exterior-grade weatherproof paint
Over the waterproofing layer, apply a UV-stable, breathable exterior emulsion paint. Two coats minimum. This is your decorative finish and colour — the waterproofing underneath is what keeps it looking good year after year.
