Harmattan Home Maintenance Checklist for Ghanaian Homes

Harmattan Home Maintenance Checklist for Ghanaian Homes

Every year between late November and early February, Ghana faces the harmattan — those dry, dusty winds blowing from the Sahara. While it brings cooler nights and a welcome break from rainy-season humidity, it also wreaks havoc on Ghanaian homes if you don't prepare. Here's the complete maintenance checklist to keep your home in top shape through the dry season — and crucially, how to use these months to prepare for the next rainy season.

How Harmattan Affects Your Home

  • Cracks appear — extreme dryness causes walls, concrete, and plaster to shrink. Hairline cracks open up that will leak when the rains return.
  • Existing leaks expand — the dry contraction widens any waterproofing failures.
  • Paint and coatings fade — dust acts as an abrasive in strong winds.
  • Roof flashing dries out — old sealant becomes brittle and pulls away.

Before Harmattan Starts (Early November)

1. Inspect and Seal Cracks

The dry air will widen any existing cracks. Walk your home and look for:

  • Wall cracks (interior and exterior)
  • Ceiling cracks
  • Foundation gaps
  • Window and door frame gaps

Seal small cracks with our Waterproof Leakage Spray — it dries flexible and won't crack when the wall expands again. For longer gaps and joints, use Butyl Rubber Tape.

2. Inspect the Roof

  • Check for cracked or missing tiles
  • Look at flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights
  • Note any rust, paint peeling, or coating failures
  • Make a list of repair spots for the dry season window

3. Service Window and Door Seals

Harmattan dust enters through tiny gaps. Check the rubber seals on doors and windows and replace any that have hardened or cracked.

During Harmattan (December – January)

4. Watch for Widening Cracks

As the air dries, do another walk-through 4-6 weeks into harmattan. Any cracks you sealed before may need a second pass. New ones may appear. Address them immediately with sealant or tape — don't wait for the rains.

5. Protect Wood Furniture and Doors

  • Apply furniture polish or wood oil monthly to prevent cracking
  • Lubricate door hinges (the dry air can cause squeaking and stiffness)
  • Don't store wooden items in direct sunlight

6. Daily Dust Control

  • Dust surfaces with a damp microfibre cloth (not dry — that just spreads dust)
  • Mop floors with water + mild disinfectant every 2–3 days
  • Keep windows mostly closed during peak dust hours (early morning and evening)
  • Clean air conditioner and fan filters weekly

End of Harmattan (Late January – Early February) — The Most Important Window

7. Do Your Exterior Waterproofing NOW

This is the single most underrated maintenance window in the Ghanaian year. Most homeowners wait until it starts raining — by then it's too late.

Harmattan-end is perfect for waterproofing because:

  • Surfaces are bone-dry — coatings adhere properly
  • No rain in the forecast — no risk of washing off uncured product
  • Coatings cure faster in dry air
  • You have time to do it right, not panic-fix during a leak

Before the rains return:

8. Deep Clean

  • Wash all curtains, cushion covers, and bedding
  • Vacuum and steam-clean carpets
  • Clean light fixtures and ceiling fans thoroughly
  • Wash all windows and screens

Health Reminders

Harmattan is hard on bodies too:

  • Drink more water than usual — dehydration sneaks up on you
  • Use moisturizer and lip balm daily
  • Wear a face covering outdoors during heavy dust days
  • People with asthma or allergies should keep medication on hand
