How to Waterproof a Bathroom in Ghana — Step-by-Step Guide
Share
A leaking bathroom is one of the most damaging and disruptive problems in any Ghanaian home or commercial building. Water seeping through bathroom walls and floors causes structural damage, mould growth, damage to neighbouring rooms, and costly repairs — all of which are entirely preventable with proper waterproofing during construction or renovation.
Whether you are building a new bathroom, renovating an existing one, or dealing with a leaking wet room, this guide from Fest Ghana Limited walks you through exactly how to waterproof a bathroom in Ghana.
Why Bathroom Waterproofing Is Essential in Ghana
Ghana's hot, humid climate accelerates moisture damage. Bathrooms in Ghanaian homes face daily exposure to water, steam, and humidity — and without a proper waterproof barrier behind tiles and on walls, water finds its way into concrete and masonry over time. The result is damp walls in adjacent rooms, peeling paint, mould, structural cracking, and in severe cases, damage to electrical systems.
This is especially common in older buildings in Accra, Kumasi, Tema, and other urban centres where bathrooms were originally built without adequate waterproofing.
When to Waterproof Your Bathroom
The best time to waterproof is before tiling — when the substrate (concrete or block wall) is clean and exposed. However, you can also waterproof an existing bathroom during renovation when tiles are removed.
Do not attempt to waterproof over existing tiles — the coating cannot bond adequately to a glazed tile surface and will not provide reliable protection.
Step-by-Step: How to Waterproof a Bathroom in Ghana
Step 1 — Prepare the Surface
Remove all old tiles, loose plaster, paint, and debris from walls and floor. The surface must be clean, dry, and structurally sound. Fill any cracks or holes with appropriate filler and allow to cure completely before proceeding.
Step 2 — Seal Joints and Corners
The most vulnerable points in any bathroom are the joints — where the floor meets the walls, and where walls meet each other. Apply Waterproof Butyl Rubber Tape along all floor-wall joints and internal corners. Press firmly to ensure full contact and adhesion.
Step 3 — Apply First Coat of Waterproof Coating
Using a brush or roller, apply an even coat of Polyurethane Waterproof Coating across all wall surfaces and the floor. Pay particular attention to the shower area, around pipe penetrations, and the lower 300mm of all walls.
Allow the first coat to cure for 24 hours in Ghana's ambient humidity.
Step 4 — Apply Second Coat
Apply the second coat perpendicular to the first for complete, even coverage. Two coats are essential — a single coat is not sufficient for a bathroom environment with daily water exposure.
Allow 48 hours of curing before proceeding to tiling.
Step 5 — Water Test Before Tiling
Before tiling, do a simple water test: block the drain and fill the floor with 25mm of water. Leave for 24 hours. If no dampness appears on the other side of the walls or ceiling below, your waterproofing is sound. Proceed to tiling.
Step 6 — Tile Over the Waterproof Membrane
Apply tiles using an appropriate tile adhesive directly over the cured waterproof coating. The coating bonds well with standard cement-based tile adhesives.
Common Bathroom Waterproofing Mistakes in Ghana
- Skipping the joints — floor-wall joints are the most common failure point; always seal with tape before coating
- Applying only one coat — two coats are non-negotiable for bathroom applications
- Not allowing full curing time — rushing to tile before the coating cures compromises the waterproof membrane
- Ignoring pipe penetrations — seal around all pipe entry points with tape and coating
- Waterproofing only the shower area — the entire bathroom floor and lower walls should be waterproofed
